Getting started
Install the app
Install Mail for Jira or Mail for Confluence from the Atlassian Marketplace onto your site, as a site administrator. The two apps are independent: install either one, or both.
After installation the app registers your site with the mail backend. This normally completes within moments; on a brand-new installation it can take up to an hour before the first mail is accepted, because the site’s mail address is derived from information the backend fetches in the background. Mail that arrives in that window for a just-installed site is held and delivered automatically once registration completes; nothing is lost.
Find an item’s email address
Every issue, page, and blog post has its own address. You never construct a Confluence address by hand; copy it from the panel.
- Open the issue or page.
- Open the Mailbox panel. In Jira it is an issue panel and an activity tab; in Confluence it is reached from the page’s byline and actions menu.
- Select the copy button next to the address shown at the top of the panel.
Jira addresses are also predictable enough to type: they have the form
<site>+<issue-key>@jira.mailbox.atlassian-apps.com, all lowercase. For a site
mycompany.atlassian.net and issue PRJ-123, the address is
[email protected]. Confluence addresses encode the page
identity in a compact token, so the panel’s copy button is the way to get them.
Receive your first mail
- Send a message, from any mail client, to the address you copied. Attachments are welcome.
- Give it a moment, then select Reload page in the panel.
- The mail appears at the top of the history. Select its row to expand the body and attachments.
The message is now part of the issue or page: its attachments are listed with the item’s other attachments, and in Jira its text is searchable through JQL (see Mail delivery).
Common first-mail problems
| Symptom | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| The mail bounced | The address is mistyped, the app is not installed on that site, or it has been uninstalled. The bounce message states the reason. |
| No bounce, but nothing in the panel yet | Delivery is retried automatically; see Mail delivery. Reload the panel after a few minutes. On a brand-new installation, allow up to an hour. |
| The panel shows a licensing message | The app’s Marketplace licence is inactive on this site. An administrator can check it under Manage apps. |
